Insurgent is the second movie from the Divergent series which is based on the best-selling book trilogy written by Veronica Roth. Let’s rewind to the first movie of the series just for a bit more clarification. The first flick, Divergent, is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human qualities. Tris Prior, played by Shailene Woodley, is warned she is “divergent” and will never fit into any specific group.
When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader Jeanine Matthews, played by Kate Winslet, to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four, future love interest played by Theo James, and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.
We’re still in an ultramodern Chicago civilization, where people are divided into five factions based on skill and aptitude. Tris is a unique “divergent” who does not conform into any category and therefore, is extremely dangerous. Jeanine is out to get Tris and has made up her own vicious squad (all former members of Dauntless) to search and destroy. Then, Jeanine puts a price on her. It appears that Tris is the only person capable of opening up this mystic box that may or may not end the isolation. Jeanine aims for Erudites to rule the world and get rid of the “divergents” once and for all.
Fellow movie-goers mentioned that Insurgent is, in fact, nothing like the book. Having read the trilogy, I agree on this point. The movie feels less-than-inspired which makes it a tad bit boring for viewers. Although it has its suspenseful moments, they are way too predictable. Even Shailene Woodley seems apathetic towards her role in the film. I must say the special effects are breathtaking. I’ve always felt like Divergent was a wretched, modern replica of The Hunger Games (which just so happens to be my all-time favorite book and film series) and this movie just hasn’t made the cut. Due to its lack of exhilaration and unsuccessful plot twists, I give this movie three out of five stars and recommend it to kids ages 12 to 18.
